Don’t paint the shapes, paint the light…what the shadows leave behind. This Venetian canal is built on one large cast shadow, which links the left-hand walkway, the boats and the water into a single shape. We study how a family of linked shadows holds a whole painting together, and how reflections follow precise optical rules.
